One thing I've enjoyed about Pokemon as a whole is that in the main games, we got to name our partners (something I feel the anime and NPC trainers in the games just fall short on). It gave them a uniqueness beyond their stats. Two players could nickname their respective Charizards, and the Pokemon would come off as two totally different personas, even if they had the same moves and numbers. Magmaroar comes off as domineering and prideful, while Cindertail sounds more collected, even smooth. Or a name could be a reference to something/someone, like Red&Blue's Mr. Mime "Marcel" being homage to Marcel Marceau (a talented and world famous mime), or Electric Tale of Pikachu's titular Pokemon, Jean-Luc Pikachu. What I'm getting at is, we all play through the same story, sometimes 20-50 times over, but with nicknames, we can remember and honor our past comrades. Tabletop drives this practice even more so. Now they're not just how we play through a story; they're characters we build, plan for, and play as. I like the adage (that some scholars believe is its original intent): "Blood of the covenant is thicker than water of the womb." Who a person associates with, who a person seeks aid from when in need, who a person tries to help are more telling of their character than who they are forced to be with, or connected to through no action of their own. With that whole long winded (and if I may say, impassioned) speech out of the way, let's share some of the names we've given our pals and companions over the years. In my Diamond game, I have a team of just Eeveelutions named after different kinds of bladed weapons: Pike (Glaceon) Nodachi (Jolteon) Partisan (Vaporeon) Naginata (Flareon) Janbiya (Espeon) and Rapier (Leafeon) There's also Mire (Honchkrow), Ramuh (Raichu), Sue (a male Gardevoir), and Lucretia (Lucario). Lucretia's name used to be Grande, as in Luca-Rio-Grande. Yes, I know, haha, funny. I've got others, but I'm holding them back so this first post doesn't get much bigger (and so I have a reason to continue posting in here). Have at it, you Poke-Maniacs. |

So, I usually come up with specific naming patterns for my Pokemon in each playthrough. Some of them become permanent names for any other of that species I catch in later games if I feel like they did exceptionally in that playthrough. Like in my game where they were all named after Pro Wrestlers I had: Lucario - The Undertaker Scizor - Kane Hawlucha - Rey(this was a different play through, but I felt it was appropriate) Haxorous - Ultimo Dragon Another playthrough I named them after characters from cartoons I watched as a kid. Nidoking - Doug Nidoqueen - Patty Machamp - Kid Muscle It just depends on what theme I choose to go with when I start the game really. |

I tend to not have naming themes, although I've noticed that I tend to gravitate more towards "real-people" names for my Pokemon. Although sometimes they get mythological names as well. |

In olden-times I used to name my Pokemon off of things seen in video games and whatnot, but lately I've been having a bend more towards real-world names, sometimes. For the Pokemon that I plan to use in battle (so, not the ones I just catch for dex purposes), I nickname all of them, no exceptions, and I give a fair amount of thought to the nicknames before I even consider catching the Pokemon in question. Here are some examples, though I have hundreds more besides: ~Latios & Latias: Cepheus and Cassiopeia, respectively, after the two mythological figures/constellations of the same name. For me, they are brother and sister rather than husband and wife, but the difference is minor. ~Metagross: Deep Blue, after the famous chess-playing computer that defeated Kasparov. This is a recurring name for me, and all my Metagross are named as such. Exceptions are the one I used in White 2, which is called "Sabaton", after the Scandinavian metal band, and the shiny ones, which are called "Meteor". Lack of originality, I know. ~Cloyster: Kai. I was told that in some language, Kai meant 'waterfall'. Having very little better naming ideas to go with, both of my Cloyster are named Kai. ~Blissey: Either Mia or Jenna, based on the Golden Sun characters. They're both cleric-type characters, so it fits. The first one was Jenna, but later incarnations tend towards Mia. Another recurring name. ~Gyarados: Naga, after the mythological creature. Another recurring name. The Gyarados in question are also female. I have a male one as well, but it's called Mr. Fish, after the MGDMT character. ~Shedinja: Hollow. I shouldn't have to explain this one. ~Hydreigon: Charybdis, the multi-headed sea monster. ...please tell me I didn't get it backwards with Scylla... ~Darkrai: Either Charon or Acheron. Same basic idea, though - Charon is the ferryman, Acheron is the river. Both are associated with Tartarus. Lately I am more attached to the name Acheron. ~Ferrothorn: Depends on gender: Bola if it's female (bola being the 3-balled instrument that vaqueros would use to capture horses), or Aaron if it's male (after the senator Aaron Burr). ~Porygon2: Cruzer, after the make of flash drive I currently own. ~Starmie: Based on the Cool Psynergy series in Golden Sun, all my Starmie (save 1) are named with a prefix of some kind, followed by the word 'cool'. Ones that exist are Megacool, Hypercool, Ultracool (shiny), and I think there's a Supercool too. The only one that isn't named this way is Uniboob, which sprang from an inside joke springing from a picture a friend of mine drew once with a Starmie wearing fishnet stockings. I should probably go find it. ~Magnezone: At first it was Planet Man (after the Mega Man Battle Network character), but as time passed, Magnezone would either be named after Jupiter (the planet), or one of the Galilean Moons of Jupiter. Ones that exist currently are Jupiter (shiny), Io, and Ganymede. The next one will probably be named Calisto, and then Europa way after that. And then sometimes I find names that pop into my head randomly (Eelektross named Stacy), by mistake (Tornadus named Kamitron, Destroyer of Worlds), from an old story I created once (Uxie/Mesprit/Azelf named Guardian/Mandy/Andy), or even just thematic (Tyranitar/Hydreigon named Olympus/Hades respectively). The first and last ones tend to be the most common. I could go on for days, but I'll leave it at that. Edited by DNA, Nov 21 2014, 11:01 AM.

I tend to name my Pokémon with nonsense letters that sound like a good name. It does take forever to name them though. The other plan is usually gods and goddesses from various pantheons, I've read a bit on them as a kid. My most recent naming spate was during a Y wonderlocke. Since I couldn't rename them, most ended up getting named after the trainer. However I don't speak Japanese so I had to improvise on a few. This lead to a boy named sue, Glaceon. @DNA you did get it backwards |

Yeah, I think Scylla was the multiheaded one. Although, on another note, does anyone know the version I read somewhere where she's a normal woman with a bunch of wolf heads instead of legs? Because...well, nowhere else has used that version, so I'm wondering if what I read was accurate. Also, for some of my characters, I have more specific naming schemes. Letitia Palmer - All her Pokemon are named after various saints. Mostly not thematically related, though. Liara Sang - All her Pokemon are named words that relate to mechanics. Tick, Tock, Gear, Motor, etc. |

Onto Soul Silver. Unlike my Platinum and both my Pearl runs, I actually made sure to nickname all the Pokemon I bothered to use for any amount of time. Something about the Sinnoh game/story just made it hard to feel connected to my teams, but the throwback to G/S/C was like coming home after a long journey. Baldr the Typhlosian (Norse god of Light, Thor's brother, his death signals the start of Ragnarok) Gunther (Fearow) Eloise (Haunter) Kai (Arbok) Boris (Azumarill) Evangeline (Ninetails) Kohaku (Persian) (It a gender neutral name in Japanese meaning amber, named after a Ninetails in my Plat version, because they both have Hypnosis bred onto them) Harper (Mawile) Gil (Blastoise) Duncan (Forretress) (Like the yo-yo, yes) Demetri (Raichu) Sean (Electabuss) Sid (Zangoose) Archer (Staryu) (after the constellation) Rose (Sandslash) Pearl (Shiny Pidgey I caught on Rt1) Clayton (Shiny Misdreavus, hatched) Alicia (Sneasel) My main team for most of the game was Baldr, Harper, Gil, Demetri, Kai (who got swapped out for Duncan for the E4 and after), and Kohaku. Harper and Gil I got as eggs from my friend before I finished Blackthorn, and I swapped out Eloise and Boris to bring them in. Demetri is a special one, though. I used to have a job (because I used to be able to walk more than five minutes without passing out), and I wore the PokeWalker on my sock during shift and on the four mile walk to and from work. I worked up a BUNCH of points on it, and Gamestop was right next to my job. I picked him up through the Pikachu Forest bonus download. He's special because he can Fly, and because he's too special that when people try to explain to him that it shouldn't be possible, he doesn't get it. Picture a Quagsire's doofy grin on a Raichu, and that's my Demetri. He doesn't flap his arms, or raise them in the air... he just kinda rises. My trainer learned to accept it over time. I giggle every time I see an Emolga, cause I've had a flying electric rodent since before that little menace was even designed. Edited by Gear_Skitty, Nov 21 2014, 10:10 PM.

Might as well share some of mine. I don't know what possessed me to name my mon any of these names. I'm sure they mean something. ~Blue Version~ Cool♂ (Blastoise), we fought our way all they way to the end. We even took down Mewtwo. After many failed attempts to capture, I figured I didn't want such a mon, when I had Cool♂. ~Heart Gold~ ((possible others transferred to this version. I don't recall)) Balder(Also Typhlosion) Krasmir (Milotic) Oyvind(Ninjask) Claudius(Rampardos) Siegfried(Dragonite) Gage(Porygon-Z) Maudire(Mismagius) Cauchemar(Haunter) Neo (Ponyta) Venom (Gligar) I have no idea why I named it venom, probably because it's poisonous looking... despite not being poison type. Magneato (Magneton) Probably because I thought it was 'neat-o'. ~White 2~ I received it after the fact... Turns out I didn't name a single one. ~ X ~ Elaine (Heliolisk) Marlocke (Delphox) Morticia (Meowstic F) Victoria (Furfrou) N (Pikachu) Beats me. Biggs (Machop) ~ Omega Ruby ~ Vladimir (Treeko) Jayce (Ralts) Cecilia (Dustox) Jezabelle (Skitty) I'd have a zizagoon named Fluffynutters, but Nintendo hates the name, so I just released it instead. This is only the handhelds, concerning the tabletop, Every single mon my character has, has a name. Edited by NickKnack, Nov 22 2014, 11:32 PM.
