I'm kicking around the idea of a character class that receives and buffs substitute and uses it as a supporting feature. The best example I think I've come up with so far, is instead of a coat, they treat Substitute as a double that shares their speed and defensive stats, but can intercept attacks for allies. Would love to hear feedback about how to make it viable though.

Increasing the frequency, and decreasing the cost of Substitute might help. Also thought of having it play around with Double Team a little as well.

I think this sounds like a really cool idea. Is this for PTU? Double Team works a bit differently in PTU than it did in PTA.

In any case, I'd suggest taking a look at Enduring Soul (regardless of system) to make sure this class doesn't completely outclass it. Perhaps instead of increasing the frequency of Substitute, you could add a feature that lets you instantly pay the hp cost again to keep your substitute from fading. Be wary of allowing it to intercept for status moves, as this can basically make the party immune to status moves. Which might be a bit silly, unless it's the class's sole schtick.

That's actually a thought. Substitutes don't actually soak damage that well, they just stop you from being completely crippled by attacks, I think I'll take that angle. It would be for PTU, probably get a recovery support move to help pay those costs... I'll do a preliminary write up for it after work. I'm thinking their features should all have Hp +2 as a stat tag as well.
