Bug Catching Contest
• Five Entrants for the contest with first through third place winning prizes
• All entrants keep the bug Pokémon they’ve entered
• Held once per day
• Pokémon in the contest range from level 12-20 (or if you want otherwise, take the Average Pokémon Level of the party and either use the range [(APL-8) to (APL) or (APL-4) to (APL+4)]
• Participants are given 10 Park Balls (Catch rate equivalent to Great Balls) and take one Pokémon with them into the park
• Time is the only thing I’m iffy on. Either A) 1d10+2 Encounters (giving a minimum 3 encounters) or B) 1d20+4 Minutes (giving minimum 5 minutes that maybe only tick outside of combat?). Open to suggestions on this one.
• Pokémon have a base multiplier applied to them as follows:
x1: Caterpie, Weedle, Metapod, Kakuna, Venonat, Wurmple, Silcoon, Cascoon, Scatterbug, Spewpa
x1.25: Butterfree, Beedrill, Vivillon, Beautifly, Dustox, Venomoth.
x1.5: Scyther, Heracross, and Pinsir
• If the Pokémon happens to be shiny, add 0.5 to the base multiplier.
• To expand further, Rolling a 100 on the encounter track nets a shiny. You reroll again on the encounter table to determine which. Optional: Roll a d4 before rerolling on the encounter table. The bonus is as follows:
1 - +0
2 - +5
3 - +10
4 - +15
If you roll 100+ on this reroll, go ahead and choose the Pokémon the player in question would want most (The RNG Gods clearly want it to be so).
• Yes, by this account, it is substantially more likely for the PC’s to encounter a shiny (the chance increases from 0.00024% to 1%). Bug Pokémon (at least those with single typing) have one of the weaker types in terms of resistances, so I figured “why not make the chance of these being special more common?” Feel free to change roll 100 as you see fit.

Scoring Formula: (Remaining HP + Pokémon Level) x Base Multiplier

Encounter Table

1-7% Caterpie
8-14% Weedle
15-21% Wurmple
22-28% Scatterbug
29-34% Metapod
35-40% Kakuna
41-46% Silcoon
47-52% Cascoon
53-58% Spewpa
59-63% Venonat
64-67% Butterfree
68-71% Beedrill
72-75% Beautifly
76-79% Dustox
80-83% Vivillon
84-87% Venomoth
88-91% Pinsir
92-95% Scyther
96-99% Heracross
100% Shiny

Let me know what you guys think, and please feel free to give suggestions.

Wooo, I like it when work is done for me!

It's a nice basic system that can be used for Poke catching contests beyond just Bug Types, with a little finagling. Fishing contests, RATtata catching contests (each one has a ribbon with a number on it, catch as many as you can in a time limit and your score is them all added up (add negatives to heighten tension)), or even Bird Sighting (the rarer the bird, the more points, must have photo proof).

My very first session ever was a bug-catching contest.
The word "contest" really stuck out I guess, because after all the bugs were caught, I had my players determine their bugs' value with a contest.
I had never run a Pokémon contest before, or even heard of them, but this terrible experience forever averted me from the idea of Pokémon contests.

It's really good to see a bug-catching contest that's so much simpler to run.
