Yeah, Onidrill's got exactly what I mean. Shinies good (in moderation and to reasonable degrees). Species Aces not so good (in the forms I've mostly seen). Picking a species that can inherently be versatile without requiring huge degrees of GM intervention best. (I could happily make a sizeable team of Clefables without needing very much in the way of snowflake abilities, though I think as with all species specialist concepts you do -need- some degree of regional variations on the Pokémon and/or shinies) Edit: Just for fun, here's a basic outline of how I'd personally do a Clefable species specialist without needing to resort to a Species Ace class. First, the class setup for the Trainer. To keep it simple, let's start with Fairy Ace. Being Fairy Type, Clefable has plenty of ways to trigger its Features already, but adding Cute Expert to ensure all of the Clefables on our team have access to Charm and Attract without having to make repetitive movesets is a good idea. Cheerleader is a possible choice, but it suffers from Cheer Brigade being a wasted Feature for a team of Clefables. Let's pick Dancer instead, since it makes up for Clefable otherwise being a bit lacking in options for raising CS (specifically, no Nasty Plot or Swords Dance). Second, the Clefables. With just adjustments via Nature and use of Attack Conflict, it's pretty easy to get stat spreads for a balanced special attacker, a tanky physical attacker, a pure defensive wall, and more. The special attacker is the easiest to make. Clefable has a ridic movepool. Give it any choice of 3 from Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Shadow Ball, Grass Knot, Hyper Voice, etc for TM/tutor moves and then stick Fake Tears, Moonblast, and a last move of your choice from natural moves. The physical attacker has a lot of options too. Lack of STAB choices is easily offset by Fairy Ace's Move Sync, and you have Body Slam, Meteor Mash, and Wake-Up Slap as solid choices from the natural move pool. Belly Drum is there if you want to be risky, and Clefable is probably survivable enough to pull it off, especially if you add recovery moves (time a Wish to go off right after using Belly Drum). For TMs and tutors, you have elemental punches, the defense curl/rollout combination, Zen Headbutt, Drain Punch, Bounce (lol), etc. Clefables built to be walls can act as clerics or disruptors. A Clefable cleric build is really straightforward, especially since they get Friend Guard. Soft-Boiled, Heal Pulse, Aromatherapy, Heal Bell, Healing Wish, Wish are all available to them in some way, and you can add Blessing Moves to round out a set. Disruptors are a bit trickier, but the Clefable family does get Encore, Sing, Sweet Kiss, and Follow Me on its natural move list. TMs and tutors would let you add some combination of T-wave, Toxic, Telekinesis, Trick, Swagger, Attract (maybe unnecessary due to Cute Expert), etc. Definitely one of the weaker implementations of the archetype, but still usable. And then you get into gimmick sets. With the given class choices (Cute Expert and Dancer in particular), Stored Power Clefable is rather doable. Add in Calm Mind and Cosmic Power. Maybe Charge Beam. And who can forget that the Clefable family's signature Metronome? If you do want one defining characteristic across all of your Pokémon, like what a Species Ace might do, having Metronome on every moveset is definitely possible. So after all this, what would you need in terms of shinies and other variations? First of all, Clefable's Ability set isn't very offensively oriented, so a GM might make a regional variation of Clefable where the population all grew up in more individualistic societies or had to adapt to harsh conditions, replacing Cute Charm and Friend Guard with more offensive Abilities, which could help the special and physical attacking Clefables. A Type Shift or two wouldn't hurt, though mono-Fairy is not a bad place to be in at all given how easy it is to plan around Poison and Steel offense. Clefairy also suffers in out-of-combat utility when it comes to transportation and similar tasks, but that's a bit more difficult to address without adding really silly shiny Pokémon, like a Giant Cleffa counterpart to the core book's Giant Caterpie example. This turned out really long. Whoops. Edited by castfromhp, Oct 22 2014, 11:49 PM.
