Hey everybody. My group and I were working on leveling up our characters (They're still rather low levels 2-4) and we looked into the Bonus Edge descriptions. For convenience, it reads: Spoiler: click to toggle We were wondering what the reason was that trainers can't use bonus edges to attain the rank they just unlocked. I understand that at these levels, you also receive a normal edge that can be applied to raise a skill to the newly attained rank, but it seems like you should be able to use the bonus to get a second skill to that rank in the same level. |

Because the reason those bonus Edges were introduced was to allow players to characterize their Trainers more and pick up skills and edges that weren't necessarily prerequisites to their classes. We wanted people to be able to sit at a comfortable position with a variety of skills, not just use the bonus edges to make sure all of their class-relevant skills were always at the maximum rank available for their level. |

So... If I trust my players not to get too OOC with the stat progression, it's fine to ignore the fine print in this case? |

He means, if he can trust his players to not game the system and solely use the bonus edge to boost class skills, can he ignore the rule that says the bonus edge must be used to raise a skill that isn't about to go to the new maximum rank possible. Personally: I don't think you should ignore that rule. It isn't really entirely about min-maxing. It's about encouraging a player to expand their character and give it breadth, not just depth, in their skills. Nothing actually goes out of balance with the rule or without, but I feel like you'd lose something if you lose this rule. So, TLDR: Nothing gets broken mechanically if you ignore this rule, but I think you lose some real possibilities for character growth. (And if your players wanna minmax with this rule, they can - just pick up the skills for your *next* class. You'll have four of 'em eventually, after all!) |
