Pokémon Trainer

Well, what exactly is the encounter going to be? If it is one trainer against all of them then I would be more worried in the other direction. Solitary bosses are actually really weak if they don't have minions to help them out. If the pokemon they are fighting end up too strong you could give them a hindering nature like modest would have been for Rattata or just cut their damage or defense arbitrarily the entire encounter. You could also have their stats start off lowered and then raise to normal or start normal and lower over time. You have a huge amount of options, you just have to pick the right one for you and your group. |

This may not be what you want to hear, but maybe this is a good time to let them learn about defeat. While maybe not as much fun as winning, defeat can teach a lot. I throw a losing battle at my players every now and then to keep things in perspective and to show them that there are times that they will lose, and that's okay. Red and Ash didn't win every fight, moreso Ash, but Trainers grow from more than just winning. |

Oh right, specifics. It's a Pokemon D&D style thing and right now each player is level 1 with a level 5 pokemon. What I'm putting them up against is the Black Knight for the campaign, a Touched of Darkrai Shadecaller with a Drowzee and a Purrloin. The encounter would be against the Shadecaller, the Drowzee and the Purrloin. In order to use up all 80 exp, I'd have to make all of them level 20, which seems a bit much for the trainers. And I know all about letting trainers lose, but this is literally the first serious encounter of the game. That seems a bit mean to throw an impossible battle at them right off the bat, especially when I'm trying to let them gain some experience. Edited by panahinuva, Jun 5 2014, 12:59 PM.

Well having the BBG lose to level 1 Trainers doesn't make hims seem very Big or Bad, either. It doesn't have to be by the book. Make a difficult, but not impossible, encounter, and give them 80xp. Simple as that. |

Yeah, that's incredibly excessive. I think you may be looking at this the wrong way man. Instead of only giving him two mon, give him a full team. Also, don't rigidly set yourself to xp amounts. Use EK's generator to randomize up some encounters along the way, to give them a more natural feeling to their encounters. That also lets them build up some experience before you hit them with the Black Knight. |

I think you should put off the encounter for a while. It's at the early levels where you see level differences make the most impact due to big gains from move pools. Furthermore, you really want your players to have a couple of Pokémon to fall back on other than their starters before throwing them into a significant encounter with high stakes. When you do make this encounter, consider splitting it up into more Pokémon and having your Black Knight only command a limited nuimber at a time, replacing them throughout the battle as they're defeated so as not to overwhelm the players with a lot of higher leveled foes at the same time. As the others have said, you can also fudge the XP here and there if you really want to give your players a big heaping of it without making an encounter that exactly matches. Just don't do that too much. |

Ok, I'll hold off on the combat encounter, but I do want to introduce him as a villain, so I'll do a skill challenge and just have them fight some soldiers once they make it out of town. |

Elemental_Knight has a generator for PTU as well as PTA for generating randomized encounters and even trainers. It's in the Homebrew section; look at the first post in the stickied topic there. |
