I have just started dealing with GMing PTU and wanted to use the Game of Throhs expansion but am unsure of how to structure a fantasy style Kanto and what to do with the story. I have 3 players, one wanting to play an archer type character, one wanting to play a thief and one that wants to play the homebrew white mage. This group is semi-experienced but I'm unsure of how to go about it.... Any helpful suggestions? |

Well, the first thing to think about is what kind of adventures do your players want to play? It's sounding from the character concepts that they probably don't want to just play a League-based game with a fantasy reskin. Given that, I'm not entirely sure whether you want to use Kanto rather than your own region - though if the aim is just to preserve the iconic feeling of Kanto, I can understand. And granted, since you are reskinning it, you have a lot of leeway for how you want to set up the world. Here are some ideas you could go with, and I'm assuming from the choice of archer rather than a gunslinger that you're going for historical rather than modern fantasy. 1) You could set up the game's premise as similar to Pokémon Conquest. Each city or town in Kanto is a small but influential city-state vying for supremacy in an age of stratification between the powers of the region. The powerful Type-themed lords leading each city's armies are the historical precursors to modern day Gym Leaders in the region. The PCs could be vassals of a lord out to conquer the region, with each lord acting in a similar function to Gym Leaders in a traditional Pokémon game - but with a greater focus on Trainer combat. Alternatively, you could have war be a backdrop in the setting and allow the PCs to have fantastical adventures while trying to avoid the conflicts between the city-states of the region. 2) You could set your game in a time of exploration, when Kanto is first being discovered and colonized. While many people remember the cities of Kanto best, like Celadon and Saffron, there are plenty of interesting places in the wilderness that are just as iconic. Mt. Moon, the Seafoam Islands, Cinnabar Island with more volcanic activity, the wilds around Fuschia where the Safari Zone was established, Viridian Forest, etc. Your players might also enjoy feeling like they can have a part in constructing the cities they know and love from the Pokémon video games. Possible larger plots could include native tribes, competition with other settlers, acting as researchers documenting the new species of the region, etc. 3) Just run your typical Final Fantasy or other choice of historical fantasy campaign, but with Pokémon. You have the elemental types as a theme in Pokémon, which translates well to how the Crystals in FF games are elementally aligned. Summoned creatures are often very important in FF titles, whether they're the Primals of FFXIV or the Eidolons of FFIX, and you have a very easy analogue to them in the Legendary Pokémon. The Blessed and the Damned splat will help a lot here too. |

I have a region that I am currently working on, but do not have it finished. The only things that I have planned currently is that there are two types of capturing. The apricot balls were just invented about a month ago, so they are twice as expensive and very scarce. They will over the course of about a week in campaign, start showing up in shops. the other method is more final fantasyesque in which trainers use magic to trap pokemon into books (sort of a take on the summoners from FFXIV). The group wants to do a Final Fantasy settlement campaign. @.@ Going to have my hands full |

The best thing I can recommend for you right now then is not to rush it if you feel you have a lot of work ahead of you. Make sure you have all your ducks in a row before starting the campaign. |
