Ecruteak City

The sun is dipping in the sky, casting a grim shadow over the low-hanging foliage of Ecruteak. The goldmine of history is easily any researcher's field day, especially those who study the history of Johto, and to a lesser extent, those who dabble in cryptozoology. The tower and a half on the north edge of town both cast a gloomy silhouette over the houses and residents... oddly enough, they all seem rather cheerful.

Everything seems to be run-of-the-mill here; Morty should be in his gym, and all other facilities seem to be in order.

Stefan takes in the feel of the city. Its a far cry from his hometown. He wonders if they're going to have to fight through the Gym to earn an audience with Morty. He almost hopes so.

The two trainers go straight to the gym, easily the darkest building in the town. Like the rest of the place, it has an authentic old-world feel to it; if one didn't know any better, they would assume it's an old house and nothing more. The large doors have silver knockers on them, but they're already open, so whatever.

Inside, the gym is completely dark. The only light ends a few feet from the door, where the sunlight reflects on two statues, apparently the beginning of a path through the void. Some trainers are kneeling on the floor next to the door, apparently working up the nerve to try... or try again?

Jones looks slightly annoyed. "Is anyone here associated with the Gym? We need to speak to Morty. We're not here as challengers."

Stefan eyes the floor with suspicion. He had never understood the occult or magical and had little patience for it. Unfortunately, he doubted that Jones would be able to summon an audience before passing their little test.

Stefan begins tapping each of his pokeballs in turn, wondering what tool would be best suited for the task.

The kneeling trainers scoff. "Man, whatever. Not like he wants to battle anyway. He wouldn't have this dumb maze up if he wanted people to fight him!" Apparently someone's failed this test a few times.

Someone seemed to hear Jones, though; from the darkness on the right side of the visible floor, a door opens up toward the trainers, revealing a small, cramped office room hidden in darkness. A young woman with glasses and very neat, tied-up hair emerges from the office, holding a phone in her hand. "I'm sorry, did you want to talk to Morty directly? I have him on the line if you'd like to talk! This is just what we have this line for!"

She hands off the phone to Jones, and someone on the other line, presumably Morty, coughs awkwardly. "Yes, this is Morty?"

Jones makes sure that his voice doesn't carry beyond the phone as he speaks. "Morty, my name is Henry Jones. There's a situation at the Burned Tower that my friend and I are aware of that we believe needs your immediate attention. I'd prefer to give specifics face-to-face and in private if possible please."

"Oh, the tower! One second..."

The trainers hear someone throw a massive switch in the back, presumably a breaker. Suddenly all the lights in the place come on; the mysterious black void in front of them, in front of the light, is much less intimidating, as it's just a thin scaffolding path stretched across a series of foam and mattresses at the bottom, reaching all the way to the back. Real smoke-and-mirrors stuff.

Morty himself is on the other side, at an arena-sized platform. He quickly makes his way across the thin path, and urges the trainers into the cramped office. It's a tight fit, but the door closes nonetheless.

The leader leans against the desk and faces the two. "So you got something, you say?"

Jones nods. "Early this morning, the Clay Pyramid dig site was attacked by people wearing Team Rocket uniforms, attempting to breach the pyramid. Stefan here and I are both trainers that are assisting in the mapping and exploration of the site, along with a number of others. Between all of us, we managed to capture all of the attackers. Interrogation of one of them by Stefan revealed that they supposedly have a base of operations in Burned Tower. We'd like your assistance in investigating the matter as you're one of the foremost experts on the tower's layout and would be more likely to notice anything awry. I realize that normally this would be a matter for the police, but well, the Rockets are known for infiltrating organizations and towns unnoticed, and as a Gym Leader you're also a local authority, and much harder to replace or coerce; which is another reason we came to you." Jones takes a deep breath, and allows Morty to take in what he's said.
